Information Sidebar Tab Overview

Summary: The information sidebar is a great way to quickly draw attention to specific information that can be relayed in more detail than is possible with a simple link.  The Information Sidebar functions in almost identical fashion to the Navigation Sidebar but in addition to links, it can also contain a description of the item that explains the subject in significant depth.  Excellent for news releases and Current Events, the Information Sidebar is a powerful feature in RWD.

1) Include Information Sidebar

Function: This option will determine whether the Information Sidebar will be displayed or not.  The setting is Off by default.  Normally, when switched on, it will appear on the right side of the web page unless the Navigation Sidebar is also switched on and is set to appear on the right side of the page, in which case the Information Sidebar will move over to the left side of the web page.  In any case, if the Information Sidebar is set to display, you must have at least one item entered in it in order for it to display.  Note: If the Administrator has an information item that is being broadcast to all pages, turning off the local sidebar will only remove your local items and the Information Sidebar itself will remain visible.

Content

Summary: This tab is used to input the information into the different components of the Information Sidebar.
The image below illustrates how the settings in the Page Builder form are represented on a web page.

2) Add New Row  /  Remove Selected Row  /  Insert New Row

Function: These buttons allow you to manage the links that will appear in this section.

Add New Row:  Creates a blank row after the last existing row
Remove Selected Row:  Deletes the rows that is currently selected
Insert New Row: Creates a new row above the currently selected row.  To Insert a row, click in the row below where you want the inserted row to appear and then click on the Insert New Row button.

Note: It may appear that the feature is functioning properly at when you insert rows at first but once you click into the other rows or close the RWD form and re-open it, the rows will appear properly.

3) Display Title

Function: Use this field to enter the headline or title of the item in the Information Sidebar.

4) Content

Function: This field contains the main content of the selected section. It will be displayed after the headline, and before the link.  While you have room to give a short summary of your item, try not to put too much text in here but rather use the feature to draw users to another page that contains the full story that you wish to convey.

5) Link Display

Function: This field will be the displayed on the web page for the link you create in the Link To field (below).

6) Link To

Function: Enter the URL of the destination web page, or the path/file name of the web page or file to be opened. If opening an external website, make sure to use the full internet syntax in the link:  http://yourwebsiteURL

7) Link Open Behaviour

Function: This field determines whether the new page will open in a separate window, or the same window as the one currently open. Generally, if opening pages within your own site, open those pages in the Same Window but if opening external websites, use New Window.

*Tips and Tricks:

The Information Sidebar will always adjust its width to the widest continuous string of text in any entry unless set by the Site Administrator to a specific width.  If you Information Sidebar is not a fixed width, you can set widen it by doing one of the following:

1) somewhere in one of the Information Sidebar entries, enter a continuous string of characters (such as ******  or ____________ to set the width of the object on the web.  Some experimentation may be necessary to get it right on the web.

2) Use non-breaking space characters instead of spaces between two or three words so that the web browser sees the two or three words as one long word.  Non-breaking space characters look like spaces but they have the special characteristic that they don't allow a line break as the computer sees the as a character.  Depending on your computer's operating system and environment, non-breaking space characters can be entered into your Information Sidebar by special key combinations or by pasting them in from the clipboard.  Consult your administrator for more help with these characters.

RWD allows you to embed a graphical image into all three sections of the Information Sidebar - the Display Title, Content and Link Display by using a special syntax [img=imagepath/filename].

You can embed multiple images in each section if you wish.  For example, if you wanted to display a picture of a dog (mydog.jpg) in your Information Sidebar, you would upload the image to your local site (to a folder called 'my_pictures' for instance) and the syntax in your Information Sidebar would be as follows:  [img=my_pictures/mydog.jpg]
You can have text on either side of this special tag if you wish - for example, with the above image, you might want a description of the picture before or after the picture itself so your entry would look something like the following:

This is a picture of my dog Corky [img=my_pictures/mydog.jpg] who is a really great watchdog.
